Why Penguins Seek Food for Their Chicks Elsewhere

KOPRI announced on July 24 that they discovered how Adélie penguins adapt their hunting strategies when food is scarce. In tough conditions, penguins retrieve food for their chicks nearby while hunting farther away for themselves. The research, discovered by Dr. Jeong-Hoon Kim’s team, tracked 47 penguins in the Ross Sea during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 summers, showing how environmental changes impacted their behavior.

This study highlights concerns that ongoing climate change could harm the penguin population and the Antarctic ecosystem. The findings were published in Marine Biology. (You min Kim, first author; Dr. Jeong-Hoon Kim, corresponding author)
